We are not native Maineiacs, but we got here as fast as we could :0). We have been living in Maine for about two years. Before that we called Florida home. We have homeschooled our eldest since second grade, the girls have never been to "school." We love homeschooling for a variety of reasons, especially the freedom it allows us. Although I am a huge homeschool advocate, I also respect everyones right to choose what is best for their children.
I am a former Connecticut elementary school teacher. Ironically, this has not helped me homeschool my children. During my first year of homeschool with my son, I found that I had recreated school at home. That was not the direction that I wanted to take. My goal is to create lifelong learners and to make learning indistinguishable from life. So I guess I am what some homeschoolers term an "unschooler." (Although, the teacher in me has a hard time with the label.) To me, this means that I am the facilitator on their journey, not the teacher.
As a facilitator, I am also a role model. I believe that if you want your kids to read, you must read; if you want your kids to write, you must write. This is one of the reasons I have started this blog. In addition, I hope this blog will serve as a chronicle of our homeschooling life, and a way to connect with other homeschoolers (or anyone else) who wants to come along on our journey.
